In The Traps with Mark Stein

Mark SteinThe little guys count too! He may not run Pro Street or Pro Stock but one of the guys that works the hardest at his racing program is Severn Bridge, Ontario’s Mark Stein. His team is totally family oriented. When they talk about the family who races together stays together, they were talking about the Stein clan.

WHEN DID YOU START RACING: 1994 on the street in the Orillia area, I was not the big dog, Johnny O was and I beat him once. In 1997 I took it to the track like a good citizen with my Vega wagon.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RACECAR: My first true race car was my Vega wagon, I had raced a Mustang on the streets but the wagon was the weapon of choice at the track. It had a self built motor with machining by John Stefko and a T350 trans and ran 13.36 at the track. We developed it chassis and motor wise ourselves until we ran a best of 10.40 at 128 mph.

WIERDEST THING EVER IN RACING: It was in the 2002 championship year, my Dad Blaine found a penny in the staging lanes and unbeknown to me he slipped it under the floor mat behind the driver’s seat. It stayed there all year, we won the last race and the championship and then he let me in on his little secret. They say in racing you make your own luck, we had some help all year and I did not know it. Thanks Dad!

MOST SATISFYING MOMENT IN RACING: We are lucky enough to have had a lot of success in racing; it is difficult to pick out a specific moment. If I was to pick one, being the first time two time OSCA championship winner ever has to be up there. What makes that even more special was the jacket that the two Mikes presented me with at the OSCA banquet. It was a one off Two Time Winner jacket and the OSCA will never again issue a similar jacket to a two time championship winner. That was special!

MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR CAREER: My buddy Johnny O has been very influential in my career, whether it was street racing or at the track. A hot Vega wagonStreet racing was very cut-throat and guys did whatever to win, all through it Johnny was a perfect gentleman, treating people with respect and helping anyone who needed it. That taught me a lot that I can use in life, racing and business and I have Johnny to thank for it. Another who had a big influence on me was Ron Wigg of Entech Racing. I went to him for machining help as a snot- nosed kid who thought he knew it all. He soon set me straight about what I knew. He kind of offended me at first but he was right and because of him I now know what is right and wrong. The last guy that made an impact on me is my father Blaine; he has been beside me every bit of the way. His support and that of the rest of the family has been nothing short of phenomenal. Thanks guys.

YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE RACECAR: With me it always is my current racecar. My Vega wagon was good; it won me two championships and the CFSCS Cool Street title. My current Vega means something special to me, most people know it used to belong to my brother Brent and I saw him pour blood, sweat and tears into the car, never thinking one day I would own it. The car really works well, it repeats, looks good and the fans love it. What more can a guy ask for.

YOUR BIGGEST RIVAL: Mario Vezina! Running Modified Street we fought tooth and nail on the track for that championship. Once we return to the pits it is back to being good friends. Most people seem to hate their rivals but with Mario and me it is a rivalry based on respect.

THANKS TO: My family first of all! Everyone eats and breathes racing, I could not do it without them. My in-laws, thanks for the support! The OSCA for giving us a place to race, John Stefko, HeadsUpRacer.com and Chris and Trish Biro for all the support you guys provide. Thanks to all my sponsors and everyone else that helps out, even those who just drop by with words of encouragement. My thanks go out to you all!

WHAT’S IN THE FUTURE: I really enjoy where I am at right now. OSCA index Mark owned brother Brent's old Vega for a period.racing is a cost effective way of going Heads Up racing and having some fun. The new Vega is so repetitive that I intend to do some IHRA events, I may not be able to run the big numbers the throttle stop car can but we certainly can run the number! My wife Christina is racing now and I really look forward to the day my daughter Gracie can get behind the wheel of a junior dragster. Then we really will be a racing family!
