In The Traps with Smokin' Joe Boniferro

Smokin' JoeWhen it comes to quick Mopar powered doorslammers there is one name that is very familiar to Canadian and IHRA Top Sportsman fans. Joe Boniferro pilots the World's quickest Mopar wedge powered doorslammer and wants to go faster!

WHEN DID YOU START RACING: 1985

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RACECAR: It's Bad!It was a 1970 Dart powered by a 360 with a tunnel ram, two four barrels, a lot of camshaft and a four speed transmission. We tubbed it out to the frame rails, added some Strange axles to beef up the rearend and went racing. We did it all in-house at Joe’s Transmission Service and every so often we took it on the street, it was a rear cool ride.

WIERDEST THING EVER IN RACING: That had to be at Cayuga in 01, I think. We were qualifying for a Pro Mod race, the car left real nice carrying the front wheels for 60 feet and when it came down the steering knuckle came apart and I hit the wall. It’s a bad feeling when you are heading for the wall and you no control over the situation and can't turn away.

MOST SATISFYING MOMENT IN RACING: In 1998 we won the Pro Comp Championship at Cayuga and also finished in the top Ten in the Canadian Pro Mod Series. Our ex Larry O’Brien Pro Stock Lebaron was just so consistent, 1998 really was a story book season. The Pro Comp win was especially satisfying due to the fact we were running a clutch car with no electronics versus a bunch of automatics with delay boxes. Definitely a good year!

MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR CAREER: I was a little kid my uncle Dave and my uncle Frank both raced at the old Niagara Dragway and at Cayuga so I guess they had a lot of influence in me taking up the sport. Frank still comes to the occasional race with us but is totally blown away by the performance of cars like ours. I thought they were great but as I got older I realized Don Garlits was the King.

YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE RACECAR: Winners Circle again!I would have to say the 99 Dodge Avenger we are using now, I am very comfortable in it and you have to be to win. I’ve always been a Mopar guy and have owned quite a few Chrysler racecars, but this one does exactly what I want it to and wins races. We have won Norwalk’s Halloween Classic three years in a row and you have to had a good car to do that.

YOUR BIGGEST RIVAL: With out a doubt it is whoever is in the other lane but it is always great to take out the local BIG DOG. Kasey Janzen and I have raced against each other for years so you could say we have a rivalry. It gets interesting at lunch on Mondays in racing season when a few of us local racers get together and talk about the weekend’s racing.

THANKS TO: First off it would have to be my family and friends they all give a lot of help and support, Ian and Janis Rae, Dave, Susie and Scott Koffel and of course all our sponsors, it would be hard to do what we are doing with out them big or small. They are all a great help and a larger part of our team’s success. Koffel's Place, Pennzoil and Joe's Transmission along with associate sponsors Al's Radiator Services, HeadsUpRacer.com, Lowdown Hot Rods, Mickey Thompson Tires, NGK Spark Plugs, Pappa's Pizza and Subs, Manton Pushrods, Scott Jahren Paint, TechPower Developments Inc, Goosen’s Heating and Air Conditioning, Stradwick's Flooring, TT Fabricating and The Balancing Act.

WHAT’S IN THE FUTURE: We are just working on our '05 plans right now. We are hoping we can get the bugs out of our new engine and go on to the next level. We finished the season off with two big wins so it will be great to start this season off on a high note. Some traveling is on the cards for the new season, we are trying to put together a package to do some of the big Mopar races and let the fans see what the World’s quickest Mopar wedge powered doorslammer can do. The new Canadian Pro Modified Racers Association series is also on our schedule along with a few match races.
